"Electrical solar panels, they never have an efficiency of more than about 20 per cent," Seegers said. "Only 20 per cent of the sunlight gets converted into electricity. So we need a huge amount of solar panels to create a huge amount of electrical energy."

In the SDS, demand for REEs in wind – neodymium and praseodymium in particular – is set to more than triple by 2040, driven by the doubling of annual capacity additions and a shift towards turbines with permanent magnets.

Steel produced by these innovative companies will be among the greenest on the planet, but as the industry increasingly moves away from coal powered operations, the world’s steel is only set to get more sustainable.
